Changes in extreme sea-levels in the Baltic Sea

چکیده
In a climate change context, changes in extreme sea-levels rather than changes in the mean are of particular interest from the coastal protection point of view. In this work, extreme sea-levels in the Baltic Sea are investigated based on daily tide gauge records for the period 1916 2005 using the annual block maxima approach. Extreme events are analysed based on the generalised extreme value distribution considering both stationary and time-varying models. The likelihood ratio test is applied to select between stationary and nonstationary models for the maxima and return values are estimated from the final model. As an independent and complementary approach, quantile regression is applied for comparison with the results from the extreme value approach. The rates of change in the uppermost quantiles are in general consistent and most pronounced for the northernmost stations.

متن کاملResolving the Baltic Sea into seven subbasins: N and P budgets for 1991–1999
Total nitrogen and phosphorus budgets based on more than 32,000 oceanographic stations have been constructed for the first time for all seven major marine basins within the Baltic Sea, including the Kattegat. The budgeted time interval, 1991–1999, comprises both extreme and more typical states of the Baltic Sea. The budgets were compared with published independent estimates of water flows and b...
متن کاملThe Trend Analysis and Forecasting of Extreme Temperature Parameters in southern part of the Caspian Sea
Increasing CO2 emissions and consequently, air temperature causes climate anomalies which affects all the aspects of human life. The purpose of this study was to assess the temperature changes and also to predict the extreme temperatures in Gilan and Mazandaran Provinces. To do this, the SDSM statistical and dynamical model was used. As well, it was applied the Mann-Kendal graphical and statist...
متن کاملEchoes from the Past: A Healthy Baltic Sea Requires More Effort
Integrated sediment multiproxy studies and modeling were used to reconstruct past changes in the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Results of natural changes over the past 6000 years in the Baltic Sea ecosystem suggest that forecasted climate warming might enhance environmental problems of the Baltic Sea. Integrated modeling and sediment proxy studies reveal increased sea surface temperatures and expanded ...

Within the Baltic Sea Region INTERREG IIIB project `Sea level change affecting the spatial development in the Baltic Sea region' (SEAREG, 2002-2005) sea levels in past and future climate were investigated based upon 6-hourly regional model results. The main factors affecting the longterm mean sea level in the Baltic Sea are the land-uplift, the eustatic sea level rise, and the water balance of ...
